„A convicted felon who had strong family ties, a stake in the community, and an education might get probation, while a man who had few family ties, little stake in the community, and little education might draw a ten-year sentence for the same crime.“
— Joe Biden 47th Vice President of the United States (in office from 2009 to 2017) 1942
„The idea of education has been so tied to schools, universities, and professors that many assume that there is no other way, but education is available to anyone within reach of a library, a post office, or even a newsstand.“
— Louis L'Amour Novelist, short story writer 1908 - 1988
Context: The idea of education has been so tied to schools, universities, and professors that many assume that there is no other way, but education is available to anyone within reach of a library, a post office, or even a newsstand. Today you can buy the Dialogues of Plato for less than you would spend on a fifth of whiskey, or Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire for the price of a cheap shirt. You can buy a fair beginning of any education in any bookstore with a good stock of paperback books for less than you would spend on a week's supply of gasoline. Often I hear people say they do not have time to read. That's absolute nonsense. In the one year during which I kept that kind of record, I read twenty-five books while waiting for people. In offices, applying for jobs, waiting to see a dentist, waiting in a restaurant for friends, many such places. I read on buses, trains, and planes. If one really wants to learn, one has to decide what is important. Spending an evening on the town? Attending a ball game? Or learning something that can be with you your life long? Ch. 1
„I think every gentleman on this floor is as well satisfied as I am that Duluth is destined to become the commercial metropolis of the universe, and that this road should be built at once.“
— J. Proctor Knott American politician 1830 - 1911
Speech on the St. Croix and Bayfield Railroad Bill, Jan. 27, 1871.
„Liberal Education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentleman. It is well to be a gentlemen, it is well to have a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, a candid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life.“
— John Henry Newman English cleric and cardinal 1801 - 1890

„Without perfect sympathy with the animals around them, no gentleman's education, no Christian education, could be of any possible use.“
— John Ruskin English writer and art critic 1819 - 1900

„Education in Chess has to be an education in independent thinking and judgement. Chess must not be memorized, simply because it is not important enough... Memory is too valuable to be stocked with trifles.“
— Emanuel Lasker German World Chess Champion and grandmaster, contract bridge player, mathematician, and philosopher 1868 - 1941
„The world is full of intelligent, well-meaning people who, for one reason or another, did not attend university but are nonetheless well-read and educated.“
— Robert B. Laughlin American physicist 1950
Context: The world is full of intelligent, well-meaning people who, for one reason or another, did not attend university but are nonetheless well-read and educated. Out there on the prairie lost opportunities of youth were the rule rather than the exception, and I slowly became disabused of the myth of the Bright Young Thing and have not believed in it since.
„I think modern educational theorists are inclined to attach too much importance to the negative virtue of not interfering with children, and too little to the positive merit of enjoying their company.“
— Bertrand Russell logician, one of the first analytic philosophers and political activist 1872 - 1970
Ch. 12: Education and Discipline
„For the error bred in the bone
Of each woman and each man
Craves what it cannot have,
Not universal love
But to be loved alone.“
— W. H. Auden Anglo-American poet 1907 - 1973
„The great menace of civilization in the present is that we offer an education with too little regard for the roots.“
— Vincent Massey Governor General of Canada 1887 - 1967
Address at the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, March 7, 1953
„A study of business education in the United States was recently conducted by Professors Robert A. Gordon of the University of California (Berkeley) and John E. Howell of Stanford University. Their book, Higher Education for Business, has been published by Columbia University Press. Among their major recommendations are:
1 - An increase in the general-education content of undergraduate business education to more than 50 per cent...
2 - Elimination of "fields of concentration" in undergraduate business schools and "drastic streamlining of the number of required courses." "Business itself is enough specialized," Professors Gordon and Howell wrote...“
