„We too. No wisdom to utter.
You've beauty, flux, and terror
To tell. So've I.“

"Black Squirrel on Cottonwood Limb's Tip" in Skyhook #23 (Winter 1954-55); re-published in Pearls From Peoria (2006)
Контексте: We too. No wisdom to utter.
You've beauty, flux, and terror
To tell. So've I. And they're
Very hard to mutter
Through so much chatter and stutter.

Вариант: It's a very Greek idea, and a very profound one. Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful, we quiver before it.

Blood and Guts in High School (1978)
Контексте: For 2.000 years, you've had the nerve to tell women who we are. We use your words; we eat your food. Every way we get money has to be a crime. We are plagiarists, liars and criminals.

„Wisdom tells me I am nothing. Love tells me I am everything. And between the two my life flows.“

—  Nisargadatta Maharaj, книга I Am That

I am
Вариант: Love says 'I am everything.' Wisdom says 'I am nothing.' Between the two, my life flows.
Источник: I Am That
Контексте: "I find that somehow, by shifting the focus of attention, I become the very thing I look at, and experience the kind of consciousness it has; I become the inner witness of the thing. I call this capacity of entering other focal points of consciousness, love; you may give it any name you like. Love says 'I am everything'. Wisdom says "I am nothing'. Between the two, my life flows. Since at any point of time and space I can be both the subject and the object of experience, I express it by saying that I am both, and neither, and beyond both."

„Terrorism undermines morality. Then, too, it undermines reason.“

—  Martin Amis Welsh novelist 1949

"The Palace of the End" (2003)
Контексте: Like all "acts of terrorism" (easily and unsubjectively defined as organised violence against civilians), September 11 was an attack on morality: we felt a general deficit. Who, on September 10, was expecting by Christmastime to be reading unscandalised editorials in the Herald Tribune about the pros and cons of using torture on captured "enemy combatants"? Who expected Britain to renounce the doctrine of nuclear no-first-use? Terrorism undermines morality. Then, too, it undermines reason. … No, you wouldn't expect such a massive world-historical jolt, which will reverberate for centuries, to be effortlessly absorbed. But the suspicion remains that America is not behaving rationally — that America is behaving like someone still in shock.
