В СССР, а затем и в России особенности восприятия творчества Браннера предопределялись русским переводом романа «Квадраты шахматного города» — Еремей Парнов в своём предисловии к русскому переводу отнёс его к «редкому синтетическому жанру антиутопического научно-фантастического детектива».
