If you think about the history of recorded music, prior to recorded music, all music was ephemeral — it happened, then it was gone, and it was therefore totally connected to a time and a place. When recording came along, suddenly you could trap a piece of time and relocate it, so you freed music from time and space, but, of course, that made it entirely repetitive. I think that in 100 years time we might start to realize that the CD player is the 20th century version of the music box in that it just does the same thing over and over…
