Том Лерер — американский композитор и певец, сатирик и математик. Наиболее известен своими юмористическими песнями, которые были записаны в 1950-е, 1960-е. Несмотря на то, что он написал всего около 50 песен, его вклад в культуру США считается значительным.

Тексты песен часто имеют отношение к науке, в особенности к математике, но также к химии и физике. В частности, в репертуаре Тома Лерера есть песенная интерпретация таблицы Менделеева , речитатив о вычитании столбиком и сатирическая песня, посвященная русскому математику Николаю Ивановичу Лобачевскому. Большое место в творчестве Тома Лерера занимает также социальная и политическая сатира. В песнях «Who’s Next» и «We Will All Go Together When We Go» тексты предостерегают об опасности ядерной войны и, таким образом, являются пацифистскими.

В начале 1970-х Том Лерер перестал выступать на сцене , посвятив своё время преподаванию математики в университете.

Context: One of the problems I see with these comics on television, particularly cable television, is, since you can say anything in terms of sex and scatological references and so on, therefore, you should do it. So they all limit themselves to these subjects and this vocabulary. My objection is that it is a lack of articulateness … Irreverence is easy, but what is hard is wit.
