„It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell.“

„Grant stood by me when I was crazy, and I stood by him when he was drunk, and now we stand by each other.“

„I think I know what military fame is; to be killed on the field of battle and have your name misspelled in the newspapers.“

„You might as well appeal against a thunderstorm as against these terrible hardships of war. War is cruelty, there is no use trying to reform it; the crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.“

„War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen, and I say let us give them
all they want.“

„War is cruelty. There's no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.“

„War is cruelty. You can't refine it.“ Memoirs of General W.T. Sherman

„You people of the South don't know what you are doing. This country will be drenched in blood, and God only knows how it will end.“

„You cannot qualify war in harsher terms than I will. War is cruelty, and you cannot refine it; and those who brought war into our country deserve all the curses and maledictions a people can pour out. I know I had no hand in making this war, and I know I will make more sacrifices to-day than any of you to secure peace.“ Memoirs of General W.T. Sherman

„In treading upon the ashes of dead men in Italy, Egypt - on the banks of the Bosphorus, one almost despairs to think how idle are the dreams and toils of this life, and were it not for the intellectual pleasure of knowing and learning, one would almost be damaged by travel in these historic lands.“

„You might as well appeal against the thunder-storm as against these terrible hardships of war. They are inevitable, and the only way the people of Atlanta can hope once more to live in peace and quiet at home, is to stop the war, which can only be done by admitting that it began in error and is perpetuated in pride.“ Memoirs of General W.T. Sherman

„There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory, but, boys, it is all hell.“

„I hereby state, and mean all that I say, that I never have been and never will be a candidate for President; that if nominated by either party, I should peremptorily decline; and even if unanimously elected I should decline to serve.“

„I have for some days held and controlled every avenue by which the people and garrison of Savannah can be supplied, and I am therefore justified in demanding the surrender of the city…I am prepared to grant liberal terms to the inhabitants and garrison; but should I be forced to resort to assault, or the slower and surer process of starvation, I shall then feel justified in resorting to the harshest measures, and shall make little effort to restrain my army—burning to avenge the national wrong which they attach to Savannah and other large cities which have been so prominent in dragging our country into civil war.“ Memoirs of General W.T. Sherman
