Энн Бронте была младшей дочерью бедного священника ирландского происхождения Патрика Бронте и его жены Марии Бренуэлл. Мать умерла, когда Энн не исполнилось и двух лет. Бо́льшую часть своей жизни Энн провела в деревне Хоэрт . Проучившись два года в школе Роу Хэд, она начала работать гувернанткой и стала единственной из сестёр Бронте, добившейся успеха в этом деле: несмотря на неудачу при первом трудоустройстве в семье Ингэм, в дальнейшем девушка в течение пяти лет обучала и воспитывала детей семейства Робинсон. По завершении этого периода младшая Бронте, как и её сёстры, начинает литературную карьеру.
