Ми́рча Элиа́де — румынский, французский и американский философ, философ культуры, религиовед, историк религий, этнограф и писатель. Получил всемирную известность как исследователь мифологии, «религиозного символизма, ритуалов, магии и оккультизма, шаманизма, древней техники экстаза, мифов, архаического сознания и способа мышления».

Профессор Чикагского университета с 1957 года, гражданин США с 1966 года. Автор более 30 научных, литературных и философских трудов, переведённых на 18 языков мира. Свободно владел десятью языками .

Из его работ по истории религии наиболее ценными являются труды, посвященные шаманизму, йоге, космогоническим мифам. Также исследовал переход от мифологического описания мира к историческому.

Although the Hebrew Bible depicts God as the father of Israel and employs personifications of God such as Word (davar), Spirit (ruah), Wisdom (hokhmah), and Presence (shekhinah), it would go beyond the intention and spirit of the Old Testament to correlate these notions with later trinitarian doctrine. The actors in myths are Supernatural Beings. They are known primarily by what they did in the transcendent times of the "beginnings." hence myths disclose their creative activity and reveal the sacredness (or simply the "supernaturalness") of their works.
