Хе́лен А́дамс Ке́ллер — американская писательница, лектор и политическая активистка. В возрасте девятнадцати месяцев Келлер перенесла заболевание , в результате которого полностью лишилась слуха и зрения. В те годы работа с подобными детьми только начала проводиться. По достижении Хелен семи лет родители решились подыскать для дочери учителя. Директор школы Перкинса для слепых прислал им молодого специалиста Энн Салливан. Салливан сумела найти подход к девочке, что стало существенным прорывом в специальной педагогике.

Получив среднее образование в нескольких школах, Келлер поступила в Колледж Рэдклифф, где получила степень бакалавра. В дальнейшем она жила со своей неизменной спутницей Салливан вплоть до смерти последней. В годы обучения Хелен стала поддерживать социализм и в 1905 году вступила в Социалистическую партию. Келлер написала больше десятка книг, рассказывающих о её опыте.

Келлер стала заметным филантропом и активистом. Она поддерживала фонды обучения и социализации инвалидов, выступала против расизма, милитаризма и дискриминации женщин, была активным деятелем Американского союза защиты гражданских свобод. За её заслуги в 1964 году Линдон Джонсон наградил её Президентской медалью Свободы. С 1980 года указом Джеймса Картера её день рождения отмечается как День Хелен Келлер. Some one was drawing water and my teacher placed my hand under the spout. As the cool stream gushed over one hand she spelled into the other the word water, first slowly, then rapidly. I left the well-house eager to learn. Everything had a name, and each name gave birth to a new thought. As we returned to the house every object which I touched seemed to quiver with life. That was because I saw everything with the strange, new sight that had come to me.
